What Is Farmhouse Lighting?

Across all industries, old trends resurface and become popular among new generations. For instance, a clothing accessory that was fashionable in the 1990s makes a comeback in 2019. Lighting and interior design styles work the same way. “Farmhouse” was a popular style in the 1800s through mid-20th century that has recently been revived. What do you need to know about farmhouse lighting?

What Defines “Farmhouse”?

ELK Farmhouse Pendant In general, a farmhouse light is any fixture that hangs from a chain or cord. More specifically, this type of lighting is inspired by country or cottage living. It’s timeless, vintage style complements the contemporary design of today’s home, making it easy to integrate with existing decor. Farmhouse style is basic, yet versatile and brings a sense of coziness to the rooms it adorns.

How to Design a Farmhouse Look

Whether you want “industrial warehouse” or a more simplified look, there are many ways to bring farmhouse charm to your living spaces.

Make a Statement

Farmhouse fixtures will stand out against the clean lines and surfaces of modern home design. If your kitchen has white walls and a white island, imagine the boldness of black or bronze light fixtures hanging from above.

Keep It Simple

For a softer look, consider seeded glass, galvanized steel or distressed wood. These materials are popular for farmhouse fixtures because they can easily match or blend in with existing colors in a room design.

Lighting Around the Vanity

blue bathroom In traditional bathroom lighting design, a bath bar is placed above the mirror for general illumination. However, overhead lighting on its own can cast shadows that make it difficult to shave or apply makeup. Consider adding vertical fixtures on either side of the mirror for more even lighting.

Swing arm sconces are both stylish and functional. They modernize the look of your bathroom and can be adjusted to meet your particular needs.

Task & Accent Lighting

When lighting a room, we tend to focus on the general illumination and can forget about the other needs for light. Task lighting is especially important in the bathroom, where you spend time getting ready and winding down after a long day. As mentioned, task lighting installed around the vanity provides more uniform brightness when and where its needed.

On the other hand, you may have some unique features in your bathroom that you want to highlight. Consider adding accent lighting to show off plants, artwork or bathroom shelving.

Buying Guide for LED Lighting

The first light-emitting diode was invented in 1962, yet LEDs did not become a popular choice for homeowners and contractors until the 21st century. LED is an energy-efficient lighting solution that provides high-quality illumination for less than traditional bulbs. Before buying LEDs, what should you know?

Switch to LED Bulbs!

Why to Choose LED Bulbs

Bulbrite LEDHow often do you change light bulbs? When you make the switch to LEDs, you won’t have to worry about this arduous task for years to come. According to the US Department of Energy, good quality LED bulbs can last anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 hours. If you have the lights on for an average of 8 hours a day, the bulbs will last for 10 to 17 years!

LED bulbs are also 80 percent more efficient than incandescent and 40 percent more efficient than CFL bulbs. When your five most frequently used light bulbs are replaced with ENERGY STAR rated LEDs, you can save about $75 a year on energy costs.

Features of LED Bulbs

When shopping for LED bulbs, there are several factors to consider that will influence your lighting experience:

  • Color Temperature: This term refers to how warm or cool a light appears. Color temperature is measured from 1,000 to 10,000 on the Kelvin scale. Our LED bulb inventory has 2700K and 3000K bulbs; these “warmer” color temperatures do not emit the blue tint commonly associated with LEDs.
  • Dimmability: This modern feature is very popular for homeowners who want to set the ambiance. If you already have dimmer switches in your home, make sure the LED bulb is compatible. You may have to replace the dimmers to prevent flickering and low output.
  • Lumens: The amount of light produced by LED bulbs is measured in lumens, rather than watts. An LED bulb may measure only 4 watts but that coverts to more than 220 lumens. The greater the lumens-to-watts ratio, the more energy-efficient the bulb is.

LED Bulbs

Customers who visit our showrooms for the first time may have a negative impression of LEDs. Bulbs purchased at other stores may have been tinted blue, burned out quickly or flickered.

At Connecticut Lighting Centers, we educate our customers as to why the LED bulbs we carry are high-quality and energy-efficient.
